Here’s a short reading for you. Thank you for following me.
“Moms, Apple Pie, and Baseball” is set in 2006, and centers Ryan Hyland riffing about his two moms and the family they have all made together.
I titled this short story “Moms, Apple Pie, and Baseball” because those three items are often described as quintessentially American. And I wanted 10-year-old Ryan’s perspective on his family to resonate as quintessentially American, too.
I hope you find Ryan’s perspective on his moms an enjoyable read (well, listen, in this case).
If you wish to read the text of the story, you’ll find it posted on Archive of Our Own, AO3, here.
If you’re new to my writing, here’s a little more background…
This story takes place five years after the events in “Galway Getaway,” the Ireland trip referenced in Ryan’s recall. “Galway Getaway” is a short story (much longer than this piece, I promise) in Turning In: More Stories of Brenna and Cassidy.
Ryan’s moms are Cassidy Hyland and Brenna Lanigan, the lead characters in my very first novel, Turning Point. The story is set in Los Angeles in 2000 and contains the themes/tropes: rivals to lovers, a 40+ lead, and first-time sapphic self-discovery.
